Carlsbad Strawberry Company is one of the oldest strawberry farms in SD. This family ran farm has been serving the community for four-generation, since the 1950s. Every Spring Carlsbad Strawberry Company opens up for U-Pick Strawberries where you can go out into the field and pick out your own strawberries.
When is the U-Pick Strawberry Season? February to July but check on their Instagram for more updates to when U-Pick is open. The field is open 9am-5pm daily.
How much and what is included? Admission to the grounds is $5 per person and 5 and under free. That admission includes the sunflower maze and walking around the general area. To enter the U-Pick Strawberry field you'll need to buy another ticket! It is $10 includes a bucket + admission to the field and if you don’t want a bucket but want to walk into the field it is $5 per person, children 5 and under are free. Each bucket can hold a little under 2 pounds of strawberries. Other activities on the farm are Apple Canon $20 to shoot 12 apples, Tractor ride around the strawberry field ($7 Adults, $5 Children), there is also a bounce house/land for children 14 and under for an extra fee. There are also food vendors like tacos, ice cream, and corn if you and the family get hungry. Cash and Credit Cards are accepted for most of the attractions.
Logistics: Parking is free but it’s a dirt road. No reservations are required to enter the farm. The front ticket booth is just for admission to the farm. When you walk in, go to the left to get the tickets for all the additional attractions. Bathrooms are available via porta potty. COVID: Masks are required for everyone over the age of 2 years old. Social Distance is encouraged, which is possible since it’s a very big open space, even in the strawberry fields. There is plenty of hand sanitizer station around the farm and we always see workers wiping down high touch areas.
What to Expect & Tips?
For U-Pick Strawberries, get your tickets right way, lines are long but they move pretty fast
Walk back to the field where they’ll hand you a pair of scissors for you to use to pick strawberries (all the scissors are sanitized)
When you enter the field, they suggested to head over to the fields near the freeway or go in the very back for the best strawberries. Many of the front fields were picked off by the time we got there.
Choose plump & firm strawberries that are completely red. Once a strawberry is picked it will stop ripening.
We liked grabbing the smaller vibrant red strawberries because they are sweeter
Look under leaves, those strawberries tend to be missed and sometimes are the best.
Once you finish picking your strawberries go to the front and they’ll hand you a bag to hold the strawberries.
Best time to go, right when they open so it won’t be too crowded and you’ll be able to find parking.
Don't forget to refrigerate the strawberries after you pick them, they will get spoiled
Check their social media if there are any changes for that day.
