Logistics: Right before the quiet town of Solvang, is a steakhouse that has been serving the community, tourists, and road trippers, for the last 30 years. AJ Spurs is a Western Theme Steakhouse is located in Buellton California. There is another location just North of Buellton in Grover Beach, California that opened in 2000. They serve dinner Monday to Friday from 5pm to 10pm and Saturday-Sunday from 4pm to 10pm. Reservations aren’t taken and wait times can range from 30 minutes to an hour on busy dinner times. We came right when it opens at 5pm and were seated right away however when we were leaving around 6:30 pm there was a slight wait. AJ Spur has its own private lot and therefore a ton of parking available.
Ambiance: AJ Spur is like you walked into a western cabin from the 1980s. It is filled with stuffed animals, pictures of the Wild West, and tons of items from the 1800s like pots and pans and random tools. Indoor and Outdoor Dining is available, but you’ll want to sit indoors to stare at all the things in this restaurant. It is very family friendly, high chairs and booster chairs are available as well as a small kids menu
Food: AJ Spur is a western steakhouse, lots of steaks, ribs, and seafood cooked over an open oak grill. There portion sizes here are massive enough to share with a friend but if you do there is a split plate charge. There is even this one menu item “The Gambler,” which is a 35 oz. Top Sirloin steak with all the fixings. If you eat everything you’ll get a free AJ Spur T-shirt.
Appetizer: Every meal at AJ starts off with A.J.’s Hearty Vaquero Soup, Tequila Beans, and Homemade Salsa. They told us to mix all those three things but we didn’t we decided to eat them separately. The one good thing about this place is that if you run out of soup, don’t be afraid to ask for more. Then after all those appetizers, they’ll give you a Garden Salad with your choice of Dressing. We had to try the avocado ranch but they also offer ranch, Italian, balsamic, and thousand islands. The hubby enjoyed the soup, lots of pieces of tender meat and veggies. He also liked the beans, again pieces of tender meat, and the sauce was slightly sweetened.
Beef Ribs: The beef ribs come in half-rack or a couple of dollars more, a full rack of ribs. Half a rack of ribs amounts to four giant ribs. The ribs were flavorful and super tender, with no need for extra sauce. I was so full from my salad and appetizer, I could only eat one rib!
The Fixings: Ordering a meal here means you get fixings with your meal A.J.’s Spuds, Rice Pilaf, French Garlic Bread. Our favorite was the spuds there are super crispy and delicious.
Rib Eye: The rib eye is 14oz but it looked bigger to us. We ordered it medium rare and it was cooked perfectly.
Kids Meal: AJ Spurs has a great kids menu, lots of variety, even for the pickiest eaters out there. Some of the items on the kids' menu include popcorn shrimp, steak, chicken tenders, and a quesadilla. The kids' meals come with the A.J.’s Hearty Vaquero Soup, Tequila Beans, and Homemade Salsa, and a choice of dessert, either ice cream or root beer float.
My daughter chose the Chicken Alfredo and when it came to the table, I thought it was a portion size for me! she loved the alfredo sauce since it was very cheesy, very strong parmesan flavor.
Dessert: Every meal comes with your choice of Vanilla Ice Cream with Chocolate Sauce, Old-Fashioned Root Beer Float or an After-Dinner Liqueur. We had to have the root beer float, we haven’t a root beer float since we were young!
Prices: Dinner is $20-50 depending on the entrée you choose. Appetizers are $10-16. Kids Meals are around $10.
Overall: A place to visit when you are up in Central California. The decor and ambiance alone is one reason just to step foot in this restaurant, another is just the cowboy, western food they provide its so good!
